Netflix introduces real-time voting feature for live events

Posted on January 21, 2026January 21, 2026 By Binge NXT

Real-time voting is a new interactive feature that Netflix has unveiled. Although the streaming service has been using rating systems like “thumbs up/down” for more than ten years, this update represents a change to synchronous viewer interaction during live broadcasts.

The feature officially made its debut today with the premiere of Star Search, airing at 6 p.m. PT / 9 p.m. ET. During the broadcast, viewers were able to cast votes as the episode progresses alongside other viewers globally.

This functionality is designed specifically for live events and allows audience input to directly impact the show’s progression and the contestants involved, says Netflix.

Technical Requirements and Limitations

In order to use the voting feature, Netflix has specified certain device requirements. Currently, it works with mobile devices and TV apps, but not with online browsers.

  • TV/Streaming Devices: Viewers can submit votes using their standard remote control.
  • Mobile App: Users can vote by tapping the screen.
  • Web Browsers: Real-time voting is not available via web browsers.

In order to participate, Netflix encourages viewers to use compatible devices and recommends those looking for comprehensive technical information to their Tudum and Help Center pages.

Development and Future Use

An early version of the technology was tested by Netflix during Dinner Time Live with David Chang prior to this formal launch. According to the firm, the purpose of this testing phase was to assess how users engaged with the interface throughout a live series.

Regarding voting mechanics, the system allocates one vote per profile. Netflix has indicated that Star Search is the first of multiple planned live events that will utilize this collective decision-making tool.
